Facilities Policies

General Guidelines and Conduct

All patrons of the SRC must abide by the University’s Student Code of Conduct. There will be disciplinary action taken for any violators of the Student Code of Conduct within the SRC facility and outside courts. The Student Code of Conduct can be accessed through the Office of Student Conduct’s webpage. 

“The Office of Student Conduct wants you to be a successful and responsible member of our community throughout your time at WCU. Our mission is to maintain an educational environment through upholding community standards and foster personal development by assisting individuals in evaluating decisions to promote learning and social responsibility.

As a member of the WCU community, the University expects you to abide by the Student Code of Conduct  both on and off campus. When you make choices and behave in a manner that does not reflect the standards defined in the Student Code of Conduct, University disciplinary action may take place.

In accordance with the University mission and values statement, the Office of Student Conduct contributes to maintaining a socially responsible community. The Office of Student Conduct serves students, faculty, staff and parents as well as the University's community constituents to address student conduct issues by:

  • Assisting in the dissemination, interpretation and enforcement of campus policies;
  • Ensuring that the student's right of due process is applied fairly and consistently;
  • Collaborating with the University and community constituents to address student behavioral issues;
  • Providing leadership opportunities for students participating on the University Hearing Board;
  • Offering learning experiences for students through the University conduct process.” (The Office of Student Conduct.)

Injury, Emergency and Safety Protocol

If an injury occurs, please contact a member of the SRC staff immediately. 

Fire alarms, AED’s, first aid kits, Public Safety emergency call buttons, staircase rescue assistance emergency call buttons, fire extinguishers and emergency exits are located throughout the facility. 

In case of a fire or power outage, do not use the elevator. 

Fire Drill Procedure

  • During a fire drill, all patrons must exit the building as quickly and efficiently as possible.
  • Patrons can leave out of any exit, but they must be directed and contained on the New Street sidewalk area (must not cross the street.)
  • Once all patrons and SRC staff are outside, no one is permitted to go back in the SRC until approval is given by the Fire Marshall.

Active Shooter Procedure

  • Patrons must follow the protocol: Run, Hide, Fight
  • Run: evacuate the facility if possible
  • Hide: hide silently in a safe place
  • Fight: take action to disrupt the shooter

General Fitness Area Policies

  • Patrons must have a valid WCU ramCard upon entering the facility.
  • Use equipment at your own risk.
  • Proper use of equipment is required. Improper use included but is not limited to: standing on equipment or weights, stacking weights/plates under equipment, hanging upside down from equipment, walking backwards on the treadmills and top loading (overhead weight lifting except for military shoulder press.) Please ask SRC staff for assistance if you are not familiar with equipment or for clarification of proper use.
  • SRC staff has the right to limit or prohibit exercises/activities performed by patrons that are seen as hazardous or high risk to themselves or others, this includes but is not limited to:
  • Usage of novel fitness and/or recreation equipment not provided/approved by SRC staff.
  • Performing dangerous or disruptive activities that may cause harm, injury or damage to SRC patrons and facilities.
  • Utilizing SRC equipment and/or recreation space for a purpose other than what it was designed for.
  • Final judgment on what constitutes a break in policy will be at the discretion of SRC staff.
  • Appropriate attire is required at all times (see Attire and Footwear for further explanation
  • All fitness equipment must be cleaned with a disinfectant wipe after usage and properly disposed of.
  • No shoes on the padded benches.
  • No transferring of equipment between floors.
  • Personal trainers and/or instructors, whether being compensated or not, who are not WCU employees are prohibited. This policy is to reduce risk of injury to members and ensure trainers/instructors are covered by liability insurance. 

Strength Equipment Policies

  • Maintain control of weights at all times. Weights are not to be dropped or slammed.
  • For deadlifts, slowly lower the weight to the platform and do not drop.
  • The use of spring lock collars or barbell clips is required on all free-weight bars.
  • All olympic lifting is prohibited (i.e. Clean, Clean and Jerk, Overhead Squat, Power Jerk, Power Snatch, etc.) *Squats and deadlifts are permitted.*
  • Final interpretation of permissible activities is reserved for SRC staff.
  • The use of any topical grip aid (i.e. chalk, liquids, sprays, lotions, etc.) is prohibited. Exception at the rock climbing wall.
  • All weights must be re-racked on the appropriately marked rack position and not left on the machine or barbell when finished.
  • Weight plates are not to be leaned against walls or equipment.
  • No excessive grunting.

Cardio Equipment Policies

  • Cardio equipment must only be used for their intended purpose. 
  • Equipment must be wiped down after use with an ERC wipe (excluding electronic screens). 

Attire and Footware

  • Exposed skin can be a risk to disease exposure. Campus Recreation requires patrons to clean fitness equipment after use and encourages patrons to clean fitness equipment prior to use. 

The following attire is required at all times: 

  • The staff reserves the right to deem any article of clothing unacceptable for the facility. Attire that is of an inappropriate/offensive manner is prohibited and patrons will be asked to adjust and/or change attire, or asked to leave the Campus Recreation Facility.
  • Shirts and shorts/pants must be worn at all times that cover the nipples, groin and buttocks through all ranges of motion (exception while in the locker room).
  • Athletic clothing appropriate for the general public.
  • Athletic shorts or pants must be worn; no jeans, pants with belts or cargo shorts/pants .
  • Clean closed-toed, athletic shoes must be worn at all times in the facility.
  • Hiking/work boots, black sole shoes, shoes with spikes, flip-flops, sandals, “croc” type shoes, and ballet shoes are prohibited in the general fitness floor facility.
  • Eye protection is encouraged in the racquetball courts.

Food and Beverage

  • Drinks must be in a non-breakable, spill proof, sealable container.
  • Only water is permitted in the facility.
  • Food is only permitted in the lobby area.
  • Proper disposal of chewing gum

Personal Technology Usage

  • Patrons must be aware of their surrounding and personal space at all times while using their personal cellular device.
  • For privacy and safety purposes, personal photography and video is prohibited in the locker rooms and restrooms.
  • Phone conversations should be conducted outside of the fitness areas and contained to the lobby area.
  • Personal music playing devices must be used with headphones at all times.
  • Unauthorized use of camera/video/audio recording devices is prohibited.
  • You may take photos for personal use in the facility, but you must obtain permission of anyone who may be identified in the photo or video.

Guest Policies and Procedures

  • Patrons are permitted to be accompanied by only 3 guests at a given time.
  • Guests (non-WCU affiliate) must purchase a membership through the SRC Membership Form (review in prior section) and have a valid state ID to be held at the front desk while in the SRC facility (along with the sponsor’s ID).
  • Guests must abide by all SRC facility policies.
  • Guests must be at least 18 years old.
  • Guests must not remain in the SRC facility without their sponsor.  
    Guests cannot rent out equipment.

Lost and Found

  • The SRC is not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged personal belongings, including items left in lockers.
  • The SRC staff is not permitted to hold valuable items for patrons.
  • Patrons must provide their own locks for lockers in the facility.
  • Contact the first floor front desk for inquiries about lost or forgotten personal belongings.  
  • The SRC staff keeps a log of found belongings and secures items until the end of the current academic semester.
  • If belongings are not claimed by the end of the current academic semester, valuables will be donated. 
  • When claiming an item from the lost and found, the patron must provide a detailed description of the item.
  • When claiming a valuable item, the patron must provide a detailed description of the item, as well as a security description (i.e. lock screen picture on their phone, etc.)
  • If a patron believes an item was stolen, they must file a stolen item report with the WCU Department of Public Safety. 

Locker Rooms and Showers

  • There is one female and one male locker room located on the ground floor of the SRC facility.
  • Lockers in the locker room and on the facility floors are for daily use only.
  • Personal locks may be used on the lockers (not provided at the SRC).
  • ADA accessible shower areas are available in the locker rooms and in the gender-neutral bathroom closest to the front desk on the ground floor.
  • Towels are not provided for the showers. 

Equipment Rentals

  • Users must provide their RamCard as collateral to require equipment rentals.
  • Only one piece of equipment can be rented out at a given time by a patron.
  • Users are responsible for the equipment they rent out. If equipment is returned damaged, the user’s contact information will be inquired and further action will be taken (such as paying for a replacement).
  • Equipment to be used by guests must be checked out by the sponsoring member.
  • Patrons are allowed to bring in equipment for personal use although equipment that is considered dangerous or out of the ordinary is not permitted. This is up to the SRC staff members discretion. 

Racquetball/Wallyball Court

  • The usage of the racquetball/wallyball courts are by a first-come basis.
  • Eye protection is encouraged in the racquetball courts.
  • Racquetball racquets, balls and safety goggles can be rented at the front desk (see Equipment Rentals for further explanation).
  • Patrons can ask a SRC facility staff member to set-up or break-down the wallyball net. 

Gym Court 1 and 2

  • The usage of the gym courts are by a first-come basis, although sharing the court and basketball nets with other patrons is encouraged.
  • Intramurals, Sport Clubs and any other reservation arrangements of the gym courts take priority.
  • Only SRC staff members are permitted to set-up and break-down gym court equipment including lowering and raising of basketball nets, volleyball nets, court curtain dividers, etc.
  • Dunking and hanging on the rims is prohibited (signage is clearly posted) and violators may be asked to leave the facility.
  • SRC staff reserves the right to govern rules of play, as needed.
  • Basketballs and volleyballs can be rented from the second floor desk (see Equipment Rentals for further explanation). 

Multi-Activity Court (MAC)

  • The usage of the MAC court is by a first-come basis, although sharing the court and basketball nets with other patrons is encouraged.
  • Intramurals, Sport Clubs and any other reservation arrangements of the gym courts take priority.
  • Only SRC staff members are permitted to set-up and break-down gym court equipment including lowering and raising of basketball nets, court curtain dividers, soccer nets, hockey nets, etc.
  • Dunking and hanging on the rims is prohibited (signage is clearly posted) and violators may be asked to leave the facility.
  • SRC staff reserves the right to govern rules of play, as needed.
  • Roller hockey is permitted but patrons must provide their own equipment and wear a helmet while playing.
  • Equipment such as basketballs, volleyballs and soccer balls can be rented from the second floor desk (see Equipment Rentals for further explanation). 

Group Fitness Studio A, B and C

  • Fitness studios are used for group fitness classes only, unless otherwise reservation arrangements are made through the Group Fitness department.
  • Equipment in the fitness studios must be wiped down with an ERC wipe after use.
  • Contact: the Associate Director or Graduate Assistant of Group Fitness and Marketing for further explanation on usage of the fitness studios. 

Indoor Track

  • The indoor track on the third floor of the SRC is 1/10th of a mile (ten laps equals one mile.)
  • Spectators are not allowed on the third floor track area.
  • Clean running/cross training shoes only (see Attire and Footwear for further explanation
  • Walkers should stay on the inside lane (closest to the railing.) Runners should pass on the outside lane.
  • Patrons must follow the direction sign.
  • Patrons should not use railings of the track as stretching aids.

Outdoor Basketball Court

  • The usage of the outdoor basketball court is by a first-come basis, although sharing the court and basketball nets with other patrons is encouraged.
  • Intramurals, Sport Clubs and any other reservation arrangements of the outdoor basketball court takes priority.
  • Dunking and hanging on the rims is prohibited (signage is clearly posted) and violators may be asked to leave the facility.
  • SRC staff reserves the right to govern rules of play, as needed.
  • The court is locked during non-operation hours of the SRC facility.
  • Patrons must ask a SRC staff member to unlock the outdoor basketball court.
  • All patrons using the outdoor basketball court must abide by the general guidelines and conduct of the SRC facility (see General Guidelines and Conduct for further explanation).
  • Outdoor basketballs can be rented from the first floor desk (see Equipment Rentals for further explanation).

Outdoor Beach Volleyball Court

  • The usage of the outdoor beach volleyball court is by a first-come basis.
  • The outdoor beach volleyball court is overseen by residence life, NOT campus recreation. All net and court maintenance issues should be communicated to their office.
  • Intramurals, Sport Clubs and any other reservation arrangements of the outdoor beach volleyball court takes priority.
  • SRC staff reserves the right to govern rules of play, as needed.
  • All patrons using the outdoor beach volleyball court must abide by the general guidelines and conduct of the SRC facility (see General Guidelines and Conduct for further explanation).
  • Volleyballs can be rented from the first floor desk (see Equipment Rentals for further explanation).
