Varsity Athletics vs. Sport Club vs. Intramurals

Varsity sports at WCU are funded entirely by the University. They offer scholarships and NCAA DII competitive play.

Sport Clubs are allocated a sum of money from the Student Government Association, they pay dues, and are entirely student run. There are varying costs and time commitments depending on the club. Some Sport Clubs are nationally and regionally ranked and others are more low key and just participate recreationally.

Intramurals consists of WCU peer vs. peer teams. There are many different offerings from one day tournaments to 6 week seasons. There are no practices, the cost to play ranges from $10 - $25 per team. Intramurals are the best way to get some exercise while meeting other students and having fun with your friends! 

How do I join a sport club?

Attending the fall involvement fair is the best way to connect with all 27 of our sport clubs! You can contact any of the sport club’s executive boards by going to their RamConnect page or by visiting the Campus Recreation website. The club’s executive boards are seasoned student members of the respective club and can answer any questions you may have about joining!

What is the financial commitment to participate in a sport club?

The cost of dues and other fees related to sport clubs depends entirely on the sport. Some sports that are offered have a higher cost in dues because of practice locations, competitiveness, and travel commitment. 

What is the time commitment?

Most of our sport clubs practice twice per week and have competitions on the weekends. Of course this commitment depends on the sport and which season they play in, where they practice (on/off campus), and competitiveness. 

Are there tryouts?

There are some sport clubs that host tryouts. To find out if there are tryouts for a specific sport club, please contact the executive board of that specific sport club. Their information can be found on the Campus Recreation website. Click on the sport club that you are interested in, and the contact info will appear.

How do I get more information about a specific sport club?

Visit the specific club’s RamConnect page for information about club events. You can also find each sport club’s executive board on the Campus Recreation website. 

Can I get a scholarship playing a sport club?

You cannot receive a scholarship for playing on a sport club. Sport clubs are funded entirely through the club’s fundraising, dues, and an allocation from the Student Government Association to help offset costs.

5 “Need to Knows” about Sport Clubs

  1.  The Involvement Fair is a great way to join a sport club and learn more. The fair occurs on the first Wednesday in September in the Academic Quad.

  5. There are great leadership opportunities that sport clubs offer. Each club has their own elected executive board that consists of student members. The executive board is made up of a president, vice president, treasurer, and secretary. Each position has their own responsibilities that can help them in their academics and future careers.
