Atmosphere of Expression

What do we mean by “Atmosphere of Expression?”

  • West Chester University is committed to upholding the rights of free expression and does not inhibit protected speech.
  • We also aspire to be a caring and inclusive community.

We believe these two things- protecting free speech and working to be an inclusive community- can both be true and are complimentary rather than exclusive. While we do not censor or punish objectionable but legitimate free speech, we also use education and other tools to support healthy community discourse. We encourage listening to others, understanding that disagreement does not need to involve vilification and hostility, and responding with curiosity, critical thinking and dialogue. We also encourage exercising freedom of expression prudently; seeking healthy discussion among diverse viewpoints rather than seeking to demean, dehumanize, or incite others.
